Esther Nienhuis, Tracks 3, 2018

This September, Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery presents TRACKS, an exhibition of new works by Dutch artist Esther Nienhuis. Inspired by a fascination with the human longing for a reality just out of reach, Nienhuis, in her new paintings, draws on images from childhood photographs to explore the nostalgia that is triggered by distance in time.

Nienhuis’s exquisitely wrought oil paintings transcend lineal memory, navigating the freedoms and potencies that come from the very indistinctness and unreliability of memory. The emotions attached to such recollections, seem to heighten their apparent reality and sharpen their relevance to the present moment.

Nienhuis studied Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and has exhibited internationally in Europe, North America and the Far East. She was awarded the Dutch art prize Gasunie Kunstprijs in 2011 and in 2012 two of her works were selected for the ZomerExpo at the Gemeentenmuseum in The Hague, the Dutch equivalent to the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
