Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery is proud to present Frank Hyder: Afterglow, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Philadelphia-based artist Frank Hyder. The exhibition will commence with an opening reception on Wednesday, March 19 from 6 - 8pm in the gallery at 262 Mott Street.

Concurrent with his solo exhibition, Hyder will be participating in the Big Egg Hunt New York, a charitable endeavor benefiting New York City children through the Studio in a School initiative and endangered Asian elephants through the Elephant Family organization. Other participating artists and designers include Jeff Koons, Leo Villareal, Julian Schnabel, Marchesa, Terry Richardson, Bruce Weber, Tracey Emin, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Having built a diverse body of work over more than 40 years, Frank Hyder's artistic practice is deeply rooted in the study of natural history and otherworldly experiences. His pieces exude light, vitality, and an Eden threatened by modernity. Inspired by extensive travels through South America, Hyder's koi fish series have captivated audiences across continents and have brought him international renown.

Hyder is a master of one of the oldest techniques of making images - woodcut. Creating undulating forms on which to transpose his koi fish, he mirrors the rhythmic beauty of the natural world in his compositions. Using layer upon layer of metal leaf and resin, Hyder's paintings shimmer with radiance and energy. Having recently broadened his koi series to include large, illuminated installation pieces, Hyder pushes his work into the realm of interactive art. Each luminary features a myriad of colored lighting options and time lapses, creating space for individual aesthetic, emotional, and intellectual contemplation.

Frank Hyder has participated in more than 150 group shows and has had over 80 solo exhibitions throughout North, South and Central America, including 9 individual exhibitions in New York City. He has been one of the few North Americans to have solo museum exhibitions in Venezuela at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Caracas Sofia Imber (MACCSI), Museo Jacobo Borges, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Zulia (MACZUL), Museo Universidad de Los Andes and Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Coro. Major awards include a Senior Fulbright Research Grant to Venezuela, U.S. Embassy Cultural Grants, MidAtlantic NEA, two Pennsylvania State Council of the Arts Grants and an International Art Programming Network Partners Grant (Bolivia, Peru, Turkey). This will be Frank Hyder's first solo exhibition at Rebecca Hossack Gallery.
