Where Flowers Gather: Hepzibah Swinford

The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery presents Where Flowers Gather, a selection of works by London-based artist Hepzibah Swinford. On view at Billy Reid, West Village, this presentation forms part of the gallery’s ongoing collaboration with the award-winning American designer.

 

Swinford’s practice centres on floral pattern and ornament, drawing on both antique and contemporary sources. Her compositins bring together a variety of visual references, from Dutch flower painting and Ming and Meissen porcelain to textile design traditions spanning William Morris and beyond. Echoes of Matisse’s still lifes, Miró’s abstraction and Rajasthani miniatures also inform her work.

 

Through this synthesis, Swinford creates layered compositions in which historical motifs are reconfigured within a contemporary visual language.
