Material Rhythms: Morten Lassen

The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery presents Material Rhythms, a new exhibition by Danish abstract painter Morten Lassen, on view at the Billy Reid atelier on Fifth Avenue. This presentation forms part of the gallery’s ongoing collaboration with the award-winning American fashion house.

 

Based in Copenhagen, Lassen has exhibited widely across the UK, Scandinavia, Germany, and Australia. His practice is characterised by working in series, often developing multiple canvases simultaneously. Through the gradual accumulation of oil paint, he constructs nuanced surfaces composed of subtle grids, shifting textures, and tonal variation.

 

Lassen’s approach is guided by intuition, unfolding without preparatory sketches. His compositions evolve through a responsive interplay of colour and form, balancing spontaneity with control. The resulting works possess a tactile, sometimes raw quality, while maintaining a considered structural clarity. Exploring a connection between the digital and the organic, his paintings invite reflection on perception, presence, and the increasingly fluid boundaries between mediated and lived experience.
