Raphael Avigdor : Both Sides Now

1 December 2025 - 31 January 2026
Overview

The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery is delighted to present Both Sides Now, the first solo exhibition by Raphael Avigdor, featuring a new body of work inspired by the ever-shifting formations of clouds observed during his travels around the world.

In these recent works, Avigdor transforms the transient beauty of clouds into evocative pictorial meditations on movement, memory, and perception. Each photograph captures a fleeting moment of stillness in nature, inviting viewers to reflect on both the universality and intimacy of gazing at the sky. Swirling shapes and shifting tones emerge as visual records of the artist’s journeys, balancing personal recollection with a shared, collective experience of wonder.

The exhibition’s title, BOTH SIDES NOW, draws inspiration from Joni Mitchell’s eponymous 1969 song — a poignant meditation on shifting perspectives, illusion, and experience. Just as Mitchell reflects on seeing life, love, and clouds from “both sides,” Avigdor’s photographs explore dualities of seeing and feeling: the outer observation of nature and the inner refection. In this way, Avigdor's images of clouds echo Mitchell’s lyrical vision of wonder, loss, and rediscovery.

Avigdor’s work has been exhibited widely across the United States, including at Lawrence Gallery in East Hampton, Spectrum Miami Art Show, Art Boca Raton, and Castle Fitzjohn Gallery in Manhattan. In addition to his visual practice, Avigdor has produced and directed two award-winning documentary films, with two further projects soon to be released.

“Once you start looking at the clouds, the way I do, it can quickly become an obsession. Don’t get addicted.”
