Melting snowball from Bliz-aard Ball Sale
David Hammons
Originally from Hammons’s work Bliz-Aard Ball Sale where the artist sold snowballs in the street of New York City, this snowball has been preserved and accidentally added to due to museum staff looking away. Originally the largest ball of Hammons’s (purchased for $1 USD), the ball was vandalized and turned into a Frosty the Snowman temporarily for the Macy’s Day Parade by schoolchildren. Regardless of the piece’s troubled past, museum archivists are adamant that it will still regardless echo Hammons’s play on nature and commodity.
