Untitled from Rene Magritte’s ‘Bad Paintings’
Rene Magritte
During World War II, Rene Magritte was forced to utilize his art materials and source materials sparingly as his current home of Belgium was under occupation and surveillance. Using sparse paint and making work assured to not cause a detainment, he painted scenes and pictures that many critics considered ‘bad’ due to his previous, more realistic surrealist paintings. The bad painting depicted here is a painting of a shrimp who has the presumed occupation of a painter, with many art historians thinking it is very much a self portrait of Rene Magritte himself.
