Hans Frans Mulleners
Overview
Hans Frans Mulleners is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Trained as a woodworker and furniture designer, his painting practice organically emerged in his workshop. He became fascinated by the ways in which grain, texture and irregularities of scrap wood could guide the form of his figurative subjects. His paintings on reclaimed panels embrace the material's warped structure, exposing traces of previous use as focal points within the composition.
Combining gestural mark-making with techniques inspired by Northern Renaissance panel painting, such as mixing foraged pigments with tempera on gesso, he carves, stains, and ebonizes the surface to blur the boundary between painting and object. Through this tactile process, scenes of human interaction gradually emerge, shaped by memories and atmospheres of the Catalan coast and canals and nightlife of Amsterdam’s historic harbour district.
