Alex Rooney

Overview
Alex Rooney’s practice centres on the human subject, explored through portraiture and narrative composition. His work investigates the dynamic interplay between representation and abstraction, enhancing the immediacy and intensity of the visual experience. Central to his approach is the act of mark-making, which serves both as a means of achieving realism and as an exploration of formal and expressive qualities in its own right.

Rooney has exhibited widely in the UK, including at the Columbia Threadneedle Prize, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition, the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize, and the Discerning Eye Exhibition at Mall Galleries. He was awarded the Gordon Hulson Memorial Prize by the Royal Society of British Artists.

Internationally, his work has been shown at the ModPortrait Exhibition at the MEAM Museum, Barcelona, and Also más que realismo XIV in Zaragoza, Spain. Ronney's work is held in both public and private collections, including the Primary Collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
