Lisa Waup

Overview

Lisa Waup is a mixed-cultural First Nations artist and curator, born in Narrm (Melbourne), whose multidisciplinary practice spans weaving, printmaking, photography, sculpture, fashion, and digital art. Lisa Waup’s grounded in a deep connection to materiality and storytelling, using symbolic forms and textures to express lived experience, cultural identity, and connection to Country.

Through her art, Waup navigates the complex threads of lost history, ancestral relationships, motherhood, and the passage of time. Her practice is both deeply personal and inherently political — a reflection on her own journey and a broader commentary on survival, memory, and resilience. Her works often embody a spiritual and physical mapping of self and place, resulting in powerful contemporary expressions that honour the past while looking toward the future.

Waup’s versatility as an artist is matched by her openness to experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. “As a multidisciplinary artist,” she explains, “I'm guided to utilize so many different mediums — they really talk to me — and in turn they're able to explain my story in different ways, they all connect with each other.” This dynamic relationship with material and process allows her to move fluidly between forms, drawing on traditional knowledge while responding to contemporary contexts.

In recent years, Waup has gained national and international recognition, with her work exhibited across major galleries, fashion runways, and design platforms. Whether creating intricate weavings or bold installations, she continues to expand her practice with a strong sense of cultural integrity and artistic innovation. Lisa Waup’s work not only connects deeply to her own story, but also invites audiences into a broader dialogue about identity, history, and the power of art to heal, connect, and transform.
