Gabriella Possum Nungurray Australian, b. 1967

Overview

Gabriella Possum Nungurray (born 1967) is an Australian Aboriginal artist and the eldest daughter of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, a leading figure of the founding Papunya painting movement of the 1970s and 1980s. Taught by her father, she began painting at an early age, developing a strong connection to ancestral narratives and visual traditions.

Working with traditional stories of Country and kinship, Gabriella Possum Nungurray’s practice is distinguished by intricately dotted landscapes and a recognisable personal style that balances inherited knowledge with contemporary expression.

She has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, with works held in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Flinders University Art Museum, the Kelton Foundation Collection, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and the Royal Collection. Her public commissions include participation in the Vivid Sydney Projection Programme at the Sydney Opera House (2016), an Art Tram commission for the Melbourne Festival (2014), and a major installation for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (2008), depicting her custodial grandmother’s Country.
