Didier Hamey French, b. 1962

Overview

Didier Hamey (b. Dunkirk, France) lives and works in Saou, in the Drôme region.

Hamey studied graphic design in Belgium before continuing his education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Since then, his practice has been guided by a close observation of the environment, weaving fantasy, memory and folklore into tantalising etchings of his childhood in Dunkirk.

His work is primarily rooted in etching techniques on recycled materials. For smaller formats, he employs cursive drypoint, while larger works are realised through relief etching on wooden panels.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Fund for Contemporary Art (FNAC), the National Library of France, and the Gravelines Museum of Printmaking. He has also been the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Musée de l’Estampe de Gravelines and was awarded a residency at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.
