'Thomas Allen – Selected for National Open Art Exhibition 2014
Somerset House, London, 18 September – 25 October
The Minerva Festival Theatre, Chichester, 17 December – 4 January
Award-winning artist, Thomas Allen, has been chosen for the third consecutive year by the judges of the National Open Art Competition to exhibit one of his works, entitled ‘Never Never Far Away Away’. Selected from thousands of submissions from across the UK, Allen’s work will first be displayed in the prestigious Somerset House, London (18 September – 25 October), where the exhibition will be hosted by renowned contemporary artists, Antony Gormley and Gavin Turk. It will then tour to the Minerva Festival Theatre, Chichester (17 December – 4 January).
The selected oil painting, ‘Never Never Far Away Away’, is intended by Allen as ‘a sort of parting tribute to the celebrated Post-Impressionist artist, Gauguin, whose work has played a significant role in the development of my own unique artistic voice.’ In recognition of this, the title is derived from two of Gauguin’s works: ‘Nave Nave Mahana’ and ‘Faa Iheihe’. Hence, it is particularly fitting that the piece should be displayed in Somerset House, home to the Courtauld Gallery, whose collection includes a number of works by Gauguin.
Allen is currently on the final shortlist for the coveted Threadneedle Prize. Previously, over the past 18 months, he has won the Anthony J Lester Art Critic Award, the SEAWARD Prize, and The Arts Club Charitable Trust Award, and has exhibited in such venues as the Royal College of Art, the Mall Galleries and the London Science Museum.
This year’s distinguished judging panel comprised of the two Royal Academicians, Norman Ackroyd RA and Chris Orr RA, sister of Richard Branson and founder of the Marrakech Biennale, Venessa Branson, and prominent British photographer, Caroline Irby.'
