Barbara Macfarlane at Billy Reid, NYC

4 March 2020 New York
Overview

This Spring, the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of works by British landscape-painter, Barbara Macfarlane, at the Noho New York store of award-winning American clothing designer, Billy Reid. Billy has a natural ability to creatively connect to his consumer through his love of community, craftsmanship and culture, values that are shared by Rebecca Hossack.

Macfarlane is renowned for her free, uninhibited and bold mark making. Her work captures the essence - and the drama - of wide-open spaces, the contrasting elements of land, sky and water, how they take the light, how they meet and merge. She uses watercolor, ink and oils on Indian rag paper, handmade by her own company, Khadi Papers.

'I draw with ink using a stick. This gives the painting an energy as the marks are drawn fast and the type of mark cannot be totally controlled. The ink lines cannot be changed once they are drawn. In all my work these marks, the street names, direction arrows, numbers or shape of the coastline assume a calligraphic quality.' - Barbara Macfarlane

Macfarlane has exhibited widely in Europe, North America, and Asia. Her work has been critically acclaimed and hugely popular; there have been sell-out shows in both London and New York.

The exhibition gives the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery a continuing presence in New York, in addition to its London galleries and new Miami site.
