Positions for Night and Day: Colin Johnstone

9 November - 10 December 1988 London
Overview

Colin Johnstone's 'Positions for Night and Day' runs from November 9th to December 10th 1988.

The exhibition title is inspired by the writings of Thomas Hill, one of the first of the great English tradition of gardeners, who emphasised the importance of where and at what time of the day planting should be performed.

Johnstone's large paintings focus on detailed images of flowers and herbs, isolated in a sea of canvas bare apart from a meticulously created layer of splatters, mud and sand.

Johnstone's minimalism is original, combining still contemplation of space with a fierce sense of nature's force.
