Stripe: Aboriginal Paintings from Papunya Tula: Group Show

12 August - 7 September 1996 London
Overview

Stripe reveals some of the extraordinary diversity of contemporary Aboriginal Art.

Too often commentators assume that Aboriginal painting is confirmed to the distinctive 'dot and circle' style - by which it first became known. This is not the case. There are many different styles, motifs and symbols. The stripe is amongst the most powerful.

Stripes have been used for millennia, in Aboriginal art - in sand-paintings, body-markings and decorations.

They can be made to tell stories, map-out journeys, confer status and make patterns. They are full of ancient powers but have an impact that is at once direct and 'modern'.

Stripe gathers together important new works by Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri, Kenny William Tjampitjinpa, Turkey Tolsen and other leading Papunya Tula artists.
